Northern-Ireland indie masters Two Door Cinema Club have released the video for “Next Year,” the third single (following “Sleep Alone” and “Sun”) off their sophomore studio album Beacon. Despite the trademark Two Door Cinema Club energetic sound, the album opener is in fact a sad piece about two lovers whose relationship is thwarted by distance, because the guy, vocalist Alex Trimble, is on tour and away from the girl throughout the year. Trimble promises her that he’ll “be home next year” and sings, “if you think of me, I will think of you.” Awww… Trimble told NME: “It was one of the first new ones we put down on the record after ‘Handshake’, ‘Sleep Alone’ and ‘Settle’, which were written quite a long time before that. It’s a song for friends who we never see.”
Directed by Giorgi Testi, the performance-type video was shot at Dublin’s O2 Arena on January 19, 2013, and features the trio and over 10.000 fans.“We’ve been having so much fun playing shows this year that we thought it very appropriate to make one into a music video. The O2 Arena in Dublin is one of the biggest headline shows we’ve ever played, so we thought it would be a great idea to capture it on film. We hope you enjoy it as much as we did!” said guitarist Sam Halliday.
Next Year will be released on February 18th on Kitsuné with a bunch of remixes. Until then, watch the video and get a free download of a beautiful remix of the song by Newcastle Indie-pop quintet Shields below.
